This grand event is a captivating blend of history, spirituality, art, and culture, and it stands as a symbol of Sri Lanka’s rich heritage.
The Kandy Perahera is a remarkable showcase of the nation’s traditions, featuring a wide array of local dances, including fire-dances, whip-dances, Kandyan dances, and various other cultural performances. Furthermore, the procession features magnificently adorned elephants, which play a central role in the festivities. The culmination of the celebration is marked by the traditional diya-kepeema ritual, a water-cutting ceremony conducted at the Mahaweli River in Getambe, Kandy.
The Kandy Perahera is deeply rooted in the cultural and religious fabric of Sri Lanka. To truly appreciate its significance, it is essential to explore its historical, religious, and cultural dimensions, as well as to delve into the various elements that make up this grand spectacle.
The history of the Kandy Perahera can be traced back many centuries, to the time when Sri Lanka was a monarchy. It was initially established to honor and safeguard the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, which was brought to the island in the 4th century CE.
